Single Player games: Half Life 2, Diablo 2, GTA IV.

Online Game: Team Fortress 2

Music Artists: Linkin Park, Placebo, Tiesto, Disturbed.

Song: Breaking the Habit – Linkin Park.

TV Series: Bleach.

Movies: The Fast and the Furious movies, Fight Club, all the Bleach movies.

Team Fortress 2

Favorite Class and why you decided to play it: Demoman. I play it because
for me it’s the most challenging of all the classes, and there’s always
room for improvement. You’re almost always in the center of the action and
you are capable of dealing huge amounts of damage. It’s the most rewarding
class and for me the most enjoyable.

Your favorite players: Zimmy, Typhoon , Vampire – They’re always there for
me and encourage me, great friends and players.

Most Kills in one round: 12 in a pickup as demo.

Best moment in TF2 and why: A double midair on Joint on badlands 2nd point
in a BOTC game. It’s the best moment for me because it was the first
midair I had ever gotten on Joint, he;s usually the one midiar-ing me, and
I’m usually not very good at midairs. It was also an important game and me
killing him when I did allowed my team to win our first and only round
against Swift and were the only team to do so in the competition.

A bit about yourself

I’m currently still in school. I love gaming, especially TF2, and music.
I’m laid back and don’t usually let things get to me, except maybe when I
play TF2 😛 I prefer not to judge people and prefer to avoid or ignore
conflict. I’m a perfectionist, to a point, I don’t give up easily and most
of the time I think when I do so something I could’ve done better. I love
watching, supporting and playing soccer. I’m into computer programming and
will probably study that after school, or become a pr0 gamer xD And
overall I’m just easy-going and chilled.

Advice for new players

New players should start off familiarising themselves with the game as
fully as possible, all the top players started off on the ‘pub’ servers,
and it’s where you pickup general knowledge of how the game works,
specifics of all the classes, layouts of maps etc. However if you ever
want to progress and compete successfully in competitive TF2 you need to
eventually progress from playing ‘pub’ servers.

The next step is to play as many pickups as possible, they are your
primary source of improvement. Playing pickups teaches you the competitive
style of play, what classes are used, how to play the different classes on
the different maps, strategies for the different maps, and overall the
exposure to the competitive style game and playing with experienced
players will really help you improve.

Once you start playing pickups you’ll likely have an idea of what your
favourite class is, and a few pickups might help you make up your mind. It
is essential you find the class you’re suited to and the class you want to
play and stick with it and focus getting better with that class. It’s
really worthwhile to speak to the more experienced players who share your
chosen class, ask them questions and seek advice, and if they’re willing,
ask them to teach you and help you in pickups so they can pass on their
knowledge which will help you improve greatly.

Try get your hands on international TF2 demos and watch how those players
play, their movement, strategies, techniques etc. You will pick up a lot
of useful knowledge. Local demos are also a great source of education.
Read up on TF2 guides and tutorials, and class-specific guides. Generally
ask as many questions as possible, about anything you’re uncertain of or
need help with, the majority of people in the community will be glad to
help you out, so don’t be shy 😛

When starting out, you shouldn’t make joining a clan your main priority.
If you join an inexperienced clan without first becoming accustomed to the
game itself it can really bring you down. When you do eventually join a
clan you should make sure the majority of the players are committed and
are focused on actually playing the game and not focused on cool-looking
tags, shiny avatars and website etc. All that only servers to slow you
down and waste your time. The main aim of a clan is to improve as a team
and become better as a unit. Ideally look for a team who shares your
ambitions and will compliment your skills and play style and one that
allows you to improve and realise your true potential.

Lastly, becoming a great TF2 player comes down to your personal
determination and motivation. You have to have the desire to improve and
the will to stick with it, even when things go bad. Ignore the people who
have nothing positive to contribute or try to discourage you, if anything,
use it as inspiration, to prove those people wrong. A lot of it comes down
to lots of practice and play time, but will ultimately be satisfying and
rewarding. This game takes a lot of work and patience to ‘master’, but it
can be very rewarding and worthwhile.

Interview with DeNeusbeer ETF2L Head Admin

Hi let’s start with a bit more about yourself

For what teams do you play clan/nation and how long you’ve been playing competitively?

Hi, I’m DeNeusbeer, besides being head admin of the ETF2L, I play medic for GoT1. I’ve been with them since the start of 2008 competitively, and before that i was roaming the GoT public server with them.
I’m not in my country’s national team, because i’m not that good 🙂

What is the ETF2L? (For those who don’t know)

The ETF2L is the European Team Fortress 2 League. We are a rather successful European TF2 league. Our website, and especially our forums are one of the main hubs for competitive TF2 in Europe. We run a regular league, as well as numerous small cups at the side. (Think of a 1on1 cup, an arena cup, or many others.)

How many clans and national teams are registered on the ETF2L?

Our stats tell me that we have 40 National teams registered and 848 6on6 teams. We have a little over 5500 registered players. Of course that covers all the teams and players that have registered with our website in the past years, so a lot are gone by now. Though a rough estimate is that at least 300 of those teams is currently active and most will participate in our next season. (Season 6 opened Sign-ups on the 6 of september and in less than 24 hours 350 already registered)  So this can go up to 400…

Is TF2 in Europe growing competitively?

This is always hard to measure, but: yes, i think it still is growing. If i look at the number of signups for each ETF2L season, it has grown every time. With Valve constantly adding new stuff to the game and drawing in new players, I think they’re doing a great job in increasing their player base. This does not only reflect on public servers, but also on the competitive players. There are new players and teams signing up daily on our website.

How is the difference between COD4, CSS and TF2 competitive in Europe?

Compared to games like COD4 and CSS, TF2 is only a small fish. The amount of teams for those games is vastly greater than it is for TF2. You can see those numbers coming back everywhere. There aren’t much LANs where you can play TF2. Currently there are only 3 or 4 organizations running TF2 competitions online, but that’s enough. Everyone who wants to play, can play. Because the TF2 scene is smaller, it is more of a tight-knit group where everyone knows each other and gets along. CSS and COD4 are notorious for their immature behavior at times where TF2 has a better reputation. In my opinion, this is what makes playing TF2 far more enjoyable.

How to incentive public players to get into competitive side of tf2?

This is an interesting one. This is what I think: If someone isn’t interested in competitive play, you can’t change that. All you can do is make other people aware of the existence of competitive TF2 and show them how much fun it can be. As an example, there’s the public server I frequent. It started out as just a public server, but some of us wanted to try to play together as a team, and so we did. Since then we talk about competitive TF2 a lot on our forums, and we wear our clan-tag ingame on that public server. Other people read that and ask us questions about it, some of which want to join. This way we’ve created 8 teams from players all coming from our public server in the course of time. The point behind this is: Try to shorten the distance between public players and competitive players. If you can be both competitive and public at once, it’s much easier to get people to cross that line.

What do you think of www.tf2.co.za TF2CCSA (TF2 Competitive Community of
South Africa) and their plans?

I really like your website, it really shows what you guys are doing and it looks very clean. I always like incentives like the match of FakkelBrigade against a local team made of Pantheon and Swift players. From what I’ve heard from RazerFox the TF2CCSA is really ambitious and has a lot of things going on. The new league seems promising too, from my experience leagues are the best type of tournament. With all the things going on, i think the TF2CCSA is on the right road.

That’s it,

– DeNeusbeer

The TF2CCSA Team really appreciates your advice and thanks a lot for your time.

TF2

Favorite Class and why you decided to play it:

1. Medic, we were lacking specific classes in miNt and no dedicated medics were to be seen in SA. I decided to salvage what I learned from my sniper/soldier experience and put all my efforts in becoming a valued medic.
2. Soldier, I love the pure brutality of this class and with the right source of inspiration you can become quite a good teamplaying soldier.

Your favorite players: Joint: pure determination, Kaboos: pure teamplayer, _enemy: pure white with a fro and generally everyone I talk to :>

Most Kills in one round: 5 on cp_granary last point (pickup as medic) and 4 pantheon members on cp_badlands last point (clan skirmish as medic) and I think ~24 as soldier on pub

Best moment in TF2 and why:

1. Getting asked to leave the pickup (due to being “too drunk”) and then getting highest score as demoman
2. Beating Brazen.TF2 3-2 on badlands for the first time.
3. Forcing opposition’s uber with my Ubersaw and then surviving to use the advantage gained from Ubersaw and win the round.

A bit about yourself

Studying Information Technology Communication Networks, something like the internet comes to mind.
I do networking, so you can guess I have a short temper (ask swift peeps :P) and I enjoy my fair share of alcohol (ask #alcoholarmy peeps). What you guys probably dont know is that I actually enjoy helping out new people and giving them tips from what I had to learn the hard way. No, that doesn’t make me a caring person, just a helpfull, short-tempered medic that curses alot. 🙂

CPU: Core 2 Quad q6600 @ 3.2GHz
Motherboard: Gigabyte P35 DS3R

Advice for new players

Aim to be unpredictable, it might make you survive long enough to save your clan-mates.

What you think new players need to do to better them and become more competitive?

Gather information on the class you want to play, learn everything you can: from exploits to scripting. For me using scripts is a sign of simply “doing your damned homework” and not a way of trying to be a hacker. Sure you get unfair scripts, but all of them have been judged and *fixed* if deemed necessary.

After gathering information, try establishing relationships with fellow TF2’ers who share your ambitions and work together on improving.

Last little tip: don’t take everything too personal while meeting new people in #TF2 or clan servers, but don’t let anyone walk over you! :>

See you in #alcoholarmy,
skillpiG.

TF2CCSA and IS Gaming TF2 League is On!

The TF2CCSA would like to announce that their plans to create a TF2 online league is becoming a reality thanks to IS Gaming. This first league will have many objectives such as community capabilities to run a successful TF2 league, to create incentive to start new clans, to motivate the multi-gaming organizations of SA to include TF2 teams on their squads and most important to give some confidence to the TF2 players to progress in skill and have a better future at a competitive level.

This community needs a boost and the good teams need to be rewarded for their hard work. The lack of competitiveness between TF2 teams makes competitions very disappointing as the difference in skill levels between top clans and the inexperienced clans is a problem that must be taken care of. The TFSCCSA team is already taking the task to improve the balance of skill levels between the community by providing some useful information and resources about how to play competitively though it may take some time to see a noticeable improvement. As we are preparing for much better leagues for next year we hope to to get a good amount of clans into this league so that we can organize leagues with different groups according to their skill levels (Pools etc). Some of the teams can take this league as preparation for the next leagues to come.

The TF2CCSA Team will run the IS Gaming TF2 League
Schedule for the ISGTF2L

* Signups open: 15 September
* Signups close: 30 September
* League starts: 5 October
* League ends: 15 December
* Entry Fee: “Free”

We are aware that running a league between October exams period can make it a bit complicated but not impossible for teams to play their matches so the suggested schedule will be very flexible for teams to complete their matches and with 10 weeks available we willl organize the minimum games that must be played per week according to the quantity of teams that enter this league.

Prizes For this league :
The TF2CCSA Website will sponsor a guaranteed R6500 in cash to share it as follows:

* 1st R3000
* 2nd R1800
* 3rd R1200
* Most Improved Team R500 (The “Most Improved Team” winner will be chosen through votes by team captains)

On behalf of the TF2 community we’d just like to thank IS Gaming for letting us use their servers for the league.
