Unlocks & Competitive TF2

Alright with the latest TF2 update “polycount pack” seems like everyone is lost again and the questions popping out on each pickup game “is this allowed?, and this and that….” is really annoying.

I was reading a Rant by dignitas/dunc at VanillaTF2.org Here that pointed out some stuff that really concerns the future of this game at top competitive level and I really think that our small competitive community with the big gaps of skills levels between the teams we currently have I really think we need to stick a simple weapons & unlocks ruleset that can help us grow in quantity and quality.

It can be fun to use all these new thing on pubs and highlander competitions but for 6vs6 think about it for a second (is all these new stuff popping out now and then taking us away from the original competitive gameplay?) The teamwork, the mastering of the class I really think that the main problem is the new generation will never close the gap with the old school players why? because it will end as personal satisfaction rather than helping the team just to point an example: “woooo I killed the medic with my Mackerel XD” so is a scout risking to get killed and let down the team just to get a lol kill with a fish?

This is the main concern with regards to weapons and unlocks that can unbalance gameplay and take us out of focus. I’m not been negative it’s cool to get new stuff in a game and competitive players should not panic as Valve knows that the comeptitive gamers can always adjust to rules that suit our needs but like Dignitas/dunc saidI don’t like the path they’ve taken our game down recently, but they’re businessmen, not competitive gamers. They need to attract new public players, because that’s how they make their money – there’s no subscription fees

And that’s about it so for now I will suggest to introduce ( Vanilla + Medlocks ) at TF2CSA compts, pickups and clannies. For our local community a rule set like ESL have at the moment ( Vanilla + Medlocks ) only to be used at competitive play is a good move but I’ll see from theΒ  community feedback to discuss this matter properly.

Please guys some feedback…

If we go back to Vanilla + Medlocks, does that consist of only the original medic unlocks or will the new ones be viable. I think the vita-saw has a chance to be highly useful in comp play if we can test it and then make a decision.

I think that the main issue with the non-standard weapons is that there is always a chance that someone will not have one of these weapons because of the random drop system. I understand that its quite easy to craft certain weapons but if all the weapons were available to all the players i’m sure that there would be a greater consideration as to which of these weapons would be allowed in comp tf2. Obviously some of them are just overpowered in a 6vs6 situation but I’m sure that a few of them would be viable.

Vanilla + Med unlocks are fine.

@ Spike, + Med unlocks means the new medic unlocks

We generally play vanilla TF2 with a few variations. Maybe a discussion on IRC with all captains in one channel agreeing to a rulseset should be done.

Firstly:

“@ Spike, + Med unlocks means the new medic unlocks”

ETF2L’s rule-set states:

2.2.1 Community weapons and random drop items are banned
2.2.8 Medic Unlocks: All achievement weapons allowed.

I’m almost certain they’re referring only to the original Medic update weapons being allowed, considering the Kritzkrieg was such a successful unlock, for both competitive and casual players, and is the most widely alternatively-used unlock in competitive 6v6.

As for the suggestion to actually follow Vanilla+Medic update game-play, here’s some insight. I’ll try to be as objective as possible even though I’m in full support of this notion, as I am a pro-Vanilla player to the max.

I can imagine this will hinder some people who’ve invested time into practising with some of the unlocks and, thus, not everyone will take kindly to vanilla+medic update in the short term. In the long term, however, it’s undoubtedly the best route to take. Valve have clearly shown that they’re willing to sacrifice balance and reason in order to cater for their target market: casual gamers.

I’m not bashing Valve; as anyone would point out, they’re just running a business. And in any case, they’ve given us the tools to allow us to play vanilla with minimal effort.

Anyways, to get the point: for the sake of the people who are not die-hard fans of vanilla TF2, perhaps we could propose to have a mutual agreement before scrims whether or not to use unlocks. I know it would be pointless because we’ll just be playing vanilla in leagues and future competitions, but it would allow players who at least want to have the fun do it without stepping on anyone’s toes.

I can’t possibly see following vanilla+medic update weapons as a big issue in leagues, however. I could be wrong, but there just seems to be a minority of players who would be against it. Let us know if otherwise, preferably before it’s too late, else we end up having these pointless arguments that achieve nothing.

That’s just my two cents in what will be a huge game-changer if we follow through with this.

They only have stats on them when you wear the entire set? So it should be fine.

Vanilla + medics ubersaw/kritzkrieg/blutsauger sounds fine to me, although the blutsauger isnt really necessary, the kritz and ubersaw to just makes the medic more versatile then a heal slave πŸ˜›

Hats ftw!

I found this today.
Apparently you can put this file on the server and enforce the ruleset.
http://f2.krus.dk/whitelists/polycount-ban/item_whitelist.txt
So it will be impossible for someone to use a banned weapon on the server.
This might be common knowledge for some of you already…maybe not

Thanks, Heckers. It looks like it recently came out, so I’m sure not many people are aware of this. I think this will work really well.

Razerfox, what we can do is use this one or two match servers for a test run, and after which we can label such servers utilising this config as “Vanilla” Match servers. We should obviously leave a few other match servers running without it, even if there doesn’t seem to be foreseeable problems with the config itself.

I think vanilla + medic unlocks is a good idea but if we ever decide to allow some of the other weapons, i feel that weapons that give no real advantage could be used. Such as the Holy Mackerel and the skillet pan, but thats just a thought. Is the equalizer also not being looked into being used?

Clearly, cosmetic items give no advantage whatsoever so it should be fine, along with hats. And on top of that, I have a feeling Valve will soon release a “force model” feature that will allow players to force their enemy character class models to their “vanilla” appearances, removing hats, badges and other cosmetic niceties that have no place in a competitive environment. Of course, this will all be on the client side, so it will just be a personal preference, and no mass effect on everyone.
