The War Update

Well most of TF2 players might be very happy as 2 of the most popular classes are getting their updates at the same time on a different way “The War Update” bring us the Demoman vs Soldier and the winner of this war will get an extra weapon… That sounds cool! But that’s not all apart from the normal 3 new weapons this update also brings some new maps, achievements, and other surprises.

We will see if the new weapons are good enough to be used competitively so let’s see how it goes and hope for the best.

Check out what you need to know to win this war on the following link:  War Update

Razerfox’s view on TF2 SA Competitive

Overview

With a quiet competitive scene at the moment there is not too much that we can do for what is left of 2009. The ISGTF2 pre season league did not take place as most of the players were busy with exams and others with holiday plans so the time scheduled to play at least 4 or 5 games did not work well at all. Most of the teams are still together but not as active, others have new players on their roster and most from the low tier have disbanded already.

2010 will kick off with good stuff for TF2 and the ISGTF2L will be the main attraction to warm up TF2 SA competitive. The success of this league can take the game to a exposure where it can get much better competitions and attract more competitive players to grow the small community that play the game in SA. TF2CCSA will make sure that the league runs smoothly, well organized and with the help of some of the community leaders we can guarantee a successful league. This league might be our last chance to spark the best of TF2 SA competitive or let the game die to go and play Online Poker.

Clans and Team Leaders

A main concern is the instability of the intermediate and low tier clans, I would like to see those team leaders with more responsibility and commitment as it is not so helpful making clans with a 30 day  life span. Leaders must choose their players properly and those players must also be serious and reliable. Do not commit to a team if you don’t have time for it as most of the times a team disbands for inactive players rather than bad results.  Some of the new generation players are expecting to become a “beast” on a class without thinking in game. Yes ‘thinking’ is something that lacks with the new generation of players. What that means is that you can have super aim, crazy mid-airs and some sick pipes but the main problem is the mind game, the thinking or reading of the game is what most TF2 clans need to focus on. You can jump into a clannie without any practice but if your players knows what has to be done without going ‘frag hunters’ or thinking of  ‘mid-airs show,’ there should not be any problem to be a competitive team.  Steam rolls happens to anyone but giving up after few of them will keep you on the same level. Everyone learns from defeats and it is the only way to know what’s wrong. But of course there are always better teams that might look impossible to beat but even if you always loose giving a good game still an improvement from a steam-roll.

There are many other factors that can lead to the failure of a team but the main factor is the ‘leadership’ of the team and how that leader manages the team on the different situations. Other thing is that sometimes a player will ask some help to a more experienced player with some tactics and moves then you do bad in your team in a clannie but sometimes is just not you remember if the teamwork fails you’ll fail, you depend on your team mates and they depend on you, for sure everyone knows this but seems like some forget it in game. A good balance of “teamwork” and “reading of the game” is a must for those intermediate and low tier clans that would like to get much better and very competitive in the future, the individual skill will show off once the teamwork and thinking is sorted first.

The base of good old school TF2 players is fading away and only a few are very active, others are casual players and the rest already quit the game. That real “knowledge” of a clan leader is lacking with the new generation of players. This is why I think its getting difficult to build a solid competitive community because there are not good enough players to create a good balance and trying to filter 24/7 public players to get a few interested in competitive gaming is not helping much. So we really need to boost the exposure of the game to attract competitive gamers from the other games and hopefully we can create a good balance of serious players that want to play competitively and give their best.

Community Feedback

I really would like to see all of the community more involved in ideas or plans to try for TF2 competitive. Anyone can suggest their idea of what the best plan to try grow the community or improve the competitive level between clans. Just let us know so that we can discuss it with the all the community members and see what we can do about it to sort the rest and make it happen if it’s a good plan.

Finally

Can we get TF2 competitive on track?

I really think we can guys we just need a well established group of players and teams to stick together to work on creating a solid base of reliable competitive gameplay for the future and gain the trust of companies and organizations to create competitions and other tournaments where the TF2 players can have fun and get rewarded for playing their favourite game.

It is possible but it will depend on us. Only if we work together can still achieve that guys, let the “emo” out of community to make things simpler and easier.

A friend of mine told me one day “remember in the old days where “fun and friendship” was always around the TF2 community members” then I realized that our main problem is that we cannot grow this community if we are not together. We already are a small community of gamers but not even because we play the same game we still see nonsense splits and other stupid endless arguments between us… it’s really annoying trying to get everyone cool and then all of the sudden there is a conflict for whatever reason that leads to a fight = minimizing the community

Think about it guys we can take TF2 competitive to the best level ever….. so are you in?

or must I send you a free copy of  Monopoly Joburg edition?

It won’t be easy but I’ll wait to see the community response of this post.

Critics are welcome of course.

Route Sentry Guide

Route Sentry is a program that was designed to use two ADSL connections and run both connections at the same time. One account being your precious international account and the other being your local account. It monitors the local and international connections and will direct local traffic through the “local” connection and direct international traffic through the “international” connection. Below is a guide on what you will need in order to run Route Sentry and how to install it.

What is required to run Route Sentry?:

  • Two connections: You will need your international-cap account with a username and password and a separate local-cap account with a username and password. A local account can be purchased cheaply from South African ISP such as Openweb and Internet Solutions. I won’t over-advertise anymore. When signing up for your local-only account make sure you choose local-only without any line speeds as all you will need is the local cap.
  • Set your modem into bridge mode: Your modem defaults to PPPoE and this will only support a single connection and therefore will not allow RS to function properly. Most modems require you to manually change the option to bridge mode. This can be done when you type your username and password “into” your modem:
    • In the Windows “Run” feature type http://10.0.0.2 (NOTE: it depends on your computers default gateway and can be found by opening Command Prompt and typing “ipconfig”; depending on whether you are using wireless or Ethernet/LAN it will be listed below the option you use)  cmd_ipconfig
    • This will bring up a panel which requires a username and password, which for most modems is admin and admin respectively, and now login.
    • Now, after typing in your username and password (assuming you haven’t), select bridge mode. This is all you need to do. Now restart your modem after saving changes.
  • Download and install Route Sentry
  • Many people will have the standard modem/router from Telkom, in that case if you follow the above steps and there is no “bridge mode” option you will need to contact Telkom Customer Care and ask them.

Half-Bridge mode :

  • This is an optional step you can take instead of setting your modem into “full” bridge-mode.
  • It is great for many people accessing the same modem as one computer may be used for gaming and will have Route Sentry and a separate laptop using wireless won’t have to install Route Sentry to access the Internet, for example.
  • “Half Bridge mode” also known as “PPPoE with Pass-Through”  is easier to setup Route Sentry as you leave your International account on your modem (with this, people using the wireless and people plugging directly into the router can access the net without having to setting up Route Sentry), and you setup a Local Dialup account on your PC.
  • Follow the same steps as “Set your modem into bridge mode” above but instead of selecting “bridge mode” select “PPPoE with Pass-Through”
  • Short guide for the “most common” ADSL modems/routers:
    • The Mega 105WR modem/router automatically sets itself to bridge mode and half bridge mode according to this forum (http://www.prophecy.co.za/forums/topic/72892-bridge-mode/page__st__20)
    • The Billion 800VGT can be put into Half-bridge mode when inserting your username and password. Go to Quick Start and in the left column there is an option called “Encapsulation” and this must be set to PPPoE with Pass-Through.

Changing the LAN/wireless connection to support the two connections:

  • Now that the modem is in bridge mode the LAN or wireless connection will need to be configured in order to allow the international and local connections to be connected simultaneously.
  • The guide to installing Route Sentry on the Antibody website will recommend using RASPPPoE to configure your LAN/wireless connection. This can only be done for Windows XP and not for Windows Vista.
  • It is not recommended to use RASPPPoE this is due to the fact that Windows 7 and Vista have the capabilities of PASPPPoE built into their OS; instead it is advised to follow these steps, courtesy of skillpiG:
    • In the Run function (XP) type “regedit” to open your Registry Editor or you can go to the Windows folder on your Local Disk (C:) and search for regedit.exe
    • Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlClass{4D36E972-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
    • Under this search for the key which has the “DriverDesc” value as “WAN Miniport (PPPOE)”
    • Under this registry key change the value of “WanEndpoints” to 2
    • Restart your computer

wanendpoints

Creating the dial-up connections in XP and Vista:

  • Create 2 dial-up connections in XP/Vista*
  • For Windows XP:
    • Click the start button > My Network Places > View network connections > Create a new connection
    • Click Next > select “Connect to the Internet” then Next > select “Set up my connection manually” then Next > select “Connect using a broadband connection that requires a username and password” then Next > type in Local or International depending on which connection you are setting up > type in you username and pass word and leave the other options ticked (for Local you can untick “Make this the default connection”) > select Next and Next again
    • Follow the above steps for both the Local and International connection
  • For Windows Vista:
    • Click the start button > Network > Network and Sharing center > Set up a connection or network
    • Select “Connect to the Internet” then Next, click “Set up a new connection anyway” (if you are already connected) then Next > select “No, create a new connection” then Next > select Broadband (PPPoE) then Next > now input your username and password, tick remember password and type Local or International (depending on the connection you are setting up) then Connect
  • On the local connection go to Properties > Networking > TCP/IPv4 > Properties > Advanced > uncheck Use Default Gateway (NOTE: this must be done!)
  • Once you have created both connections, connect to the International connection first and thereafter connect to the Local connection

defauly_gateway

*  If you are using Half-bridge mode, then only create a single dial-up connection for your Local connection.

Downloading, installing and using Route Sentry:

  • Route Sentry is a very small program – about 620 Kb – and can be downloaded from the Antibody Software Website (http://antibody-software.com/web/software/software/route-sentry-:-local%10international-traffic-router-utility/)
  • Install Route Sentry but do not open the program.
  • Go to the folder where Route Sentry is installed (most likely C:Program FilesRoute Sentry) and right-click RouteSentry.exe and Run it as administrator
  • Now the following window will pop-up, select the drop down arrow for the Local connection and select Local. For the International connection do the same but select International for the International connection
  • Now if you are using Half-bridge mode, your International connection will be your Local Area Network (LAN) or your Wireless connection as your International username and password will be “in” the modem.

route_sentry1

  • When both connections are connected click Set up Routes Now
  • Selecting the “Log” tab you will find the following:

route_sentry2

  • To make using Route Sentry even easier, keep “Automatically reconnect local/international connections when disconnected” and “Automatically set up routes when both connections connected” ticked

Using Route Sentry with email programs and Call of Duty 4:

  • When Route Sentry is running both the Local and International connections are running. This causes problems with sending and receiving emails when using Outlook Express and/or Microsoft Office Outlook. This is because your local ISP (which isn’t your Telkom or international ISP) will try to authenticate and the authentication server and won’t allow you to access SAIX emails with a Local connection
  • I have found that by disconnecting the Local connection using Route Sentry you can send and receive emails
  • NOTE: make sure you connect the Local connection afterwards
  • For CoD4 you will find that a connection error (Authenticating key code) will occur when entering a server for CoD4
  • For this, you can read the following SGS Gaming Forum Thread (http://games.saix.net/cgi-bin/sgsbb/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=322;t=57475) or simply copy the following IP’s into your Localroutes.dat file at the bottom of the list:
    • Go to the folder where Route Sentry is installed (most likely C:Program FilesRoute Sentry) and open Localroutes.dat using Notepad
    • 63.146.121.11,255.255.255.255
      63.146.121.12,255.255.255.252
      63.146.121.16,255.255.255.240
      63.146.121.32,255.255.255.224
      63.146.121.64,255.255.255.192
      63.146.121.128,255.255.255.128
      63.146.122.0,255.255.254.0
      63.146.124.0,255.255.255.240
      63.146.124.16,255.255.255.252
      63.146.124.20,255.255.255.254
  • As for other games (such as TF2 and Warcraft III) Route Sentry works normally and does not require any IP additions (have not tried any other multiplayer games yet that might need those additions)

I hope this guide really helps people by allowing them more freedom to play online games such as Team Fortress 2, The Call of Duty games, Warcraft III and also for the browsing of local websites. I would like to thank Xt3rM!n@tor and skillpiG for their advice and contributions. If you require any help or do not understand a problem you have please contact either me (XoloX), Xt3rminator or skillpiG in #tf2 channel on IRC or through Steam.
