This short article shall be an apology from myself on behalf of the tf2.co.za Admin Team as well as the local IRC channel, #firstname.lastname@example.org, for the absolutely unacceptable tomfoolery that ensued yesterday with regards to one of our own pickup admins actually hacking on our local servers. This article will also serve to clear up any misconceptions or confusion as to what actually happened.
The ex-admin in question shall not be named. Even though most people are already well aware of who it was, enough shame and attention has already been brought upon him.
The unfortunate happening took place on the local ammomod server, where the cheater in question was apparently “testing out aimbot” against some of the regular locals who make use of the server. However, the so-called “testing” soon turned to blatant cheating and misuse of the server, and a soon-to-be torrent of rage as the cheater in question purposefully revealed his identity related to his real account. Myself and others, through reconnaissance, confirmed that it was indeed true and it was him who was cheating. In the process, it was also discovered that two other admins who were supposed team-mates to the cheater in question were well aware of his identity and the fact that he was “testing out” hacks before anyone else bothered to do anything about it. It was also confirmed that they attempted to cover for him in the event that I questioned their knowledge of any of the shenanigans that took place. Again, while most people are aware of who they are, they’ve received more attention than they ever deserved and shall remain nameless in this article.
Needless to say, the proverbial ****storm took place in the local IRC channel, and the admins in question were immediately reprimanded and banned; the cheater has been permanently banned. While the bans on the other two admins have been lifted, their admin rights have been revoked: they can take this as a severe warning. Misuse of admin rights as well as covering for a cheater shall not be tolerated.
What commenced thereafter was an antagonistic parade of attention-seeking by the cheater in question as he promptly joined every populated local public server and made it blatantly obvious that he was using aimbot, and proceeded to ruin the gaming experiences of many local players, most of whom didn’t even have anything to do with #tf2 or the competitive scene, but were merely bystanders to this outrageous ridiculing by our ex-admin.
While he was promptly and permanently banned from all the IS servers, unfortunately there was no SGS admin present and thus one of the SGS servers was fully exploited by the cheater, and was definitely an embarrassment for all parties involved.
Needless to say, I apologise for this disgusting behaviour, as well as the mishandling of the whole situation which could have been cleanly resolved should we have had the proper administrative structure set in place.
While it was a huge shame for the community, and especially for the remaining admin team for both #tf2 and tf2.co.za, the situation has been resolved and the necessary punishments have been put in place.
We’ll work hard to make sure nothing like this happens again, as well as to move on and prepare for greater things that are just around the corner for us.
Thank you for your time and understanding.
