Clearly, cosmetic items give no advantage whatsoever so it should be fine, along with hats. And on top of that, I have a feeling Valve will soon release a "force model" feature that will allow players to force their enemy character class models to their "vanilla" appearances, removing hats, badges and other cosmetic niceties that have no place in a competitive environment. Of course, this will all be on the client side, so it will just be a personal preference, and no mass effect on everyone.

I think vanilla + medic unlocks is a good idea but if we ever decide to allow some of the other weapons, i feel that weapons that give no real advantage could be used. Such as the Holy Mackerel and the skillet pan, but thats just a thought. Is the equalizer also not being looked into being used?

Thanks, Heckers. It looks like it recently came out, so I'm sure not many people are aware of this. I think this will work really well.

Razerfox, what we can do is use this one or two match servers for a test run, and after which we can label such servers utilising this config as "Vanilla" Match servers. We should obviously leave a few other match servers running without it, even if there doesn't seem to be foreseeable problems with the config itself.

I found this today.
Apparently you can put this file on the server and enforce the ruleset.
http://f2.krus.dk/whitelists/polycount-ban/item_whitelist.txt
So it will be impossible for someone to use a banned weapon on the server.
This might be common knowledge for some of you already...maybe not

Vanilla + medics ubersaw/kritzkrieg/blutsauger sounds fine to me, although the blutsauger isnt really necessary, the kritz and ubersaw to just makes the medic more versatile then a heal slave :P

Hats ftw!

Firstly:

"@ Spike, + Med unlocks means the new medic unlocks"

ETF2L's rule-set states:

2.2.1 Community weapons and random drop items are banned
2.2.8 Medic Unlocks: All achievement weapons allowed.

I'm almost certain they're referring only to the original Medic update weapons being allowed, considering the Kritzkrieg was such a successful unlock, for both competitive and casual players, and is the most widely alternatively-used unlock in competitive 6v6.

As for the suggestion to actually follow Vanilla+Medic update game-play, here's some insight. I'll try to be as objective as possible even though I'm in full support of this notion, as I am a pro-Vanilla player to the max.

I can imagine this will hinder some people who've invested time into practising with some of the unlocks and, thus, not everyone will take kindly to vanilla+medic update in the short term. In the long term, however, it's undoubtedly the best route to take. Valve have clearly shown that they're willing to sacrifice balance and reason in order to cater for their target market: casual gamers.

I'm not bashing Valve; as anyone would point out, they're just running a business. And in any case, they've given us the tools to allow us to play vanilla with minimal effort.

Anyways, to get the point: for the sake of the people who are not die-hard fans of vanilla TF2, perhaps we could propose to have a mutual agreement before scrims whether or not to use unlocks. I know it would be pointless because we'll just be playing vanilla in leagues and future competitions, but it would allow players who at least want to have the fun do it without stepping on anyone's toes.

I can't possibly see following vanilla+medic update weapons as a big issue in leagues, however. I could be wrong, but there just seems to be a minority of players who would be against it. Let us know if otherwise, preferably before it's too late, else we end up having these pointless arguments that achieve nothing.

That's just my two cents in what will be a huge game-changer if we follow through with this.
